Taking the Pulse: Youth, Faith and Vocations
In October 2018, bishops from around the world will, once again, gather in Rome for a Synod. The topic of this meeting is “Young People, the Faith and Vocational Discernment”.
Proclaiming the joy of the Gospel is the mission of the Church and all the synods are geared towards this mission. Now, the Church wants to see how she can lead young people to recognize and accept the call to the fullness of life and love, and to ask young people to help in identifying the most effective ways to announce the Good News today.
And so, the Church around the world has been asked to speak to young people. We began that process here at S+L with a forum with young people in Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, Windsor, Montreal and Quebec City.
With Taking the Pulse we want to continue those conversations with more young people.
It is our hope that, by listening to young people, the Church will once again hear the Lord speaking in today’s world and can glimpse the paths the Church is called to follow.
Coming out of High school and going into university is a very exciting time for many young people. At the same time, having the prospect of your whole life ahead of you can be extremely terrifying. Darryl and Rachel are still in University and struggling to see how their faith can help guide them as they make their way in the world as adults.
300 young people from around the world participated in a meeting in Rome to share their input with the Synod of Bishops on where young people are at today. Emilie Callan, producer and ambassador of Salt + Light Television, was one of two delegates representing Canada. She speaks about her experience in Rome and what came out of the week-long meeting.
Dominic and Jasmine are two young adults who have hopes and dreams for their future. Dominic is new in the Catholic Faith. Jasmine has been in the Faith all her life, yet they have similar fears and desires for their future.
How can two people with the same upbringing end up with completely different beliefs? This is the main question that Deacon Pedro asks T.J. and Chrisandra. They are a brother and sister who grew up in a Catholic household. As adults, she is active in her faith, was a campus missionary and works as a Campus Minister. He is not active in his faith and is not even sure he believes in God.
How young is too young to get married? This is the question that Deacon Pedro asks Noah and Martha, ages 20 and 21. They speak about their faith, their fears, their hopes and how they make big decisions in life.
